What is Deadly Mold?

Only certain species of mold are considered to be toxic to humans. This mold is black in color and is sometimes referred to as black mold. You can find this mold almost in any indoor environment. All it needs to grow is moisture. Many buildings have this mold growing behind walls and in other areas where you cant see it. It is called toxic mold because it is thought to cause health problems in some people. In particular, people who suffer from asthma or allergies are most likely to suffer a severe reaction to this type of mold. These reactions can be potentially fatal, so individuals with respiratory problems should avoid mold infested areas.

The Effects of Toxic Mold

The most common toxic mold is Stachybotrys chartarum. This mold grows in damp conditions. It prefers to grow on materials made from cellulose or that contain cellulose. Wood, paper, and textiles are all good places for Stachybotrys to grow on. This toxic mold is a greenish black mold that is slimy in it appearance. The presence of this mold poses a true hazard to the health of the buildings occupants as well as to the structure of the building itself. In addition, it smells bad and will greatly lower the indoor air quality of the building. This mold is found anywhere damp conditions exist.

Strains of toxic mold produce chemicals called mycotoxins. It is these mycotoxins that are the root of health problems associated with mold. They can cause health problems in all people, not just ones who suffer from allergies. You cannot see the mold spores floating about in the air. They are microscopic in size.

The most common symptoms of Stachybotrys contamination are coughing up blood and nosebleeds. When inhaled, the spores from this type of mold is thought to cause hemorrhaging of the lungs. It does this by weakening the blood vessels. Pregnant women, infants and the elderly should avoid coming in contact with this type of mold as they are in a high risk group for having severe reactions to it. Some of these reactions can be memory loss or bleeding of the lungs.

The Warning Signs of a Deadly Mold Problem

One of the first indications of a hidden toxic mold problem is when the occupants of a building start to complain about frequent and sudden respiratory ailments. This is especially true if some of the individuals are not prone to allergies, but are exhibiting signs associated with respiratory allergies.

Another indication of a deadly mold problem would be a musty smell coming from walls, floors or vents. If the building has areas known to be prone to high moisture, these areas should be checked immediately for mold.
