Tips for Detecting Mold and Protecting Yourself from It

Most molds live on organic surfaces or on surfaces containing organic matter. In order to grow and multiply, molds need a source of moisture. During the growth cycle, the mold actually starts to "eat" the surface it is growing on. This activity will start to breakdown the surface. Therefore, mold infested wood, paper and leather will start to deteriorate quickly if mold develops on it. Fruit is also broken down by certain molds. Mold growing on the skin of fruit is actually causing the part of the fruit under the skin severe damage.

Although we think of mold as being a health hazard and bad for people, it has some redeeming qualities. Many of the cheeses we enjoy like blue cheese and Camembert get their distinctive taste and color from mold. Penicillin, an antibiotic that revolutionized modern medicine was derived from mold. The common red mold we see growing on bread is currently being used in genetic studies.

Ways of Finding Mold

The best way to find mold is through a complete inspection of the premises. A good indication for the potential for mold growth is a telltale musty odor in places where there are obvious signs of water. Any signs of wood rot is another indication that mold is either present or has been there before.

It is never advisable to leave mold infestations unchecked. Mold spores are everywhere in the environment. All they need is a little moisture in order to grow into a real problem. If a building or room smells musty, there is most likely mold growing in it. Testing for mold by a professional can be a costly undertaking.

Protecting Yourself from Mold

Dead or alive, the mold must be removed. Even dead mold can cause health problems in some individuals. When attempting to remove or clean mold, certain safety precautions need to be followed. You must wear gloves, eye protection and either a mask or respirator. A disposable jumpsuit is advisable, but any clothing that can be quickly laundered is all right. Do not wear clothes that say dry clean only!

To remove the mold, you need to dampen it first. This will reduce the risk of the spores flying into the air. If you think you have a toxic mold problem, get a test kit or have a professional come in to handle the mold removal and cleanup. Although it may be expensive, professional cleaning can be a better alternative to do it yourself, especially in a larger mold infestation.
