How to Get Rid of Mold

Even the most impeccably kept homes can be infested with mold. All that mold needs to grow is a little moisture and the proper growing medium. If there is water seepage into a crawl space, a homeowner can end up with a mold issue. Homeowners need to routinely check for mold in order to protect their investment and avoid unnecessary repairs.

A Home Remedy for Removing Mold

Before doing any kind of mold removal, make absolutely sure the room has proper ventilation. Small amounts of mold can be removed with detergent and water. Then completely dry the surface and use a solution of 1/2 cup household bleach to 1 gallon of water to disinfect the surface. This should kill all remaining mold.

Never mix chlorine bleach with anything that contains ammonia or ammonia compounds. This mixture will produce a toxic gas that can be very damaging to your lungs. In order to prevent this, purchase products and kits designed for mold removal.

You should also check out the information available from the CDC prior to undertaking the cleanup. The CDC has valuable tips and advice on safety precautions and proper cleanup methods. Be sure that you have eradicated the source of moisture that caused the mold problem. Failure to do this will result in a return of the mold.

Materials and Guidelines For Getting Rid of Mold

Mold removal kits may contain a pressure washer, eye protection and a detergent designed for mold removal. Do not use products containing bleach when removing mold from the outside of your home. Bleach can damage many types of siding.

Start the cleanup by wetting the moldy surface with plain water using the pressure washers low setting. This will keep many of the spores from going airborne and it will prevent porous surfaces like brick and stone from possibly becoming discolored by the detergent. Getting the surrounding plants wet with water will help protect them too.

Begin to clean by placing the syphon into the detergent and continue spraying the house on low. Start at the bottom and work your way up; in small manageable sections. Be sure to overlap the previously cleaned area a little bit. Then go over the entire area on high pressure, using clean water, to rinse the area well. Be careful not to damage any siding while using the high pressure. Roof shingles are very susceptible to damage, so be careful. You can adjust the cleaning power of the sprayer by either changing nozzles, switching from low to high pressure or by changing the angle that you are spraying with. Always rinse from the top down, being sure to check for any remaining mold or for damage to the siding.
