Mold Control Tips You Can Use Today
Mold can be controlled rather easily. The best way to control mold is to control moisture. Keeping mold under control will benefit all the residents of your home, as mold can cause health problems and deteriorate building and house structures. You should not use humidifiers, as these can promote the growth of mold, especially in areas that are not well ventilated like basements, bathrooms and closets. One of the best ways to control mold is with low humidity and high light. Install a dehumidifier and keep lights on in areas that tend to be damp and dark. This will help keep the mold away. Be sure that all rooms prone to having high moisture levels like bathrooms, kitchens, basements and laundry areas all have good air circulation. Fans and vents should be installed in these rooms in order to control that mold effectively. Mold growth has to be prevented and controlled in your home. The best way to accomplish this is with good air circulation, low humidity and good housekeeping habits. Be sure to use air conditioners when temperatures permit. Air conditioners lower humidity and filter the air. These filters should be changed monthly, especially on a central air system. Never carpet or wallpaper your bathrooms or other damp rooms like laundry rooms and basements. It is very easy for mold to grow underneath these surfaces and remain undetected until a huge problem exists. Clean surfaces in bathrooms and kitchens with a bleach solution to prevent mold from forming. If any mold is seen, remove it immediately with a detergent or bleach solution and water. Regularly inspect under sinks, around toilets, showers and tubs for any signs of leaks. Make sure all caulking around these areas is intact. Also check your houseplants to see that the soil is not over wet and starting to mold. If it is, change it. Keep firewood outdoors until they are ready to be used. Do not bring moldy wood into the house. You should get rid of it. Finally, you can install ionic or ozone based filters throughout the home. These will remove and kill mold and keep it from growing in your home. Negative ion filters are very effective at removing mold spores from the air. They work by charging ions with a negative electrical charge. These charged ions stick to dirt in the air and make it too heavy to stay airborne. These heavy particles then either fall to the floor or get trapped in the filter where they can be easily cleaned and removed. Many of these filters also offer an ozone filter. As air is passed through the filter, it is treated with ozone, killing any mold spores and ridding your home of potential problems. This type of filter is much more effective than the older HEPA filters; most are quieter too.
