What Is Mold?
Mold is a member of a group of organisms called fungi. Mold spores are everywhere. This is because mold spores play such an important role in the food chain by breaking down and consuming dead organic matter. Indoors, however, mold is a problem. Indoor mold growth should be prevented because of the potential risks to human health. The "Moldy" Basics Mold is spread through airborne spores. These spores float in the air and eventually land on surfaces. Although we cannot see them, spores are everywhere. When a mold spore lands on a surface that is damp, the spore (which is like a mold seed) will start to grow. If conditions are right, the mold will spread rapidly. Touching or inhaling mold or mold spores can cause health problems in some individuals. People with asthma or allergies are more prone to serious reactions than others. Some mold will release chemicals called mycotoxins. These are the chemicals that cause the most severe mold reactions in humans. Due to the fact that mold can be such a potential health problem, it is best to do everything you can to prevent it from growing indoors. Get Mold Under Control You can control indoor mold infestations by controlling the moisture in the environment. Mold growth inside a home requires immediate attention. The source of the excess moisture must be identified and eliminated. If this is not done, the mold will return even after proper cleanup and removal. Smaller mold problems may be handled by the homeowner in a DIY manner. For larger areas of infestation, a professional should be called in. If the area of mold to be dealt with is less than ten square feet, you can follow basic cleanup and removal guidelines. Managing Mold The EPA has guidelines for homeowners on how to improve their indoor air quality. One of the suggestions is to be sure that the HVAC systems are free and clear of mold growth. Mold is a very real problem. It can cause health ailments and cause structural damage to your home if left unchecked. An HVAC system contaminated with mold will spread mold spores throughout the building and make the mold problems worse. To prevent this, the air ducts should be cleaned to remove all mold. Furthermore, if any mold growth is the result of a sewage backup then a professional should be called in for safe cleanup and removal.
