Tips for Dealing with Mold and Mildew
Every homeowner has had a mold or mildew problem to deal with. Mold and mildew usually occur during the spring and summer months, which makes sense because spring and summer are usually the most humid and they have the most rain. Mold and mildew grow in damp conditions. They need moisture, low light and a surface to grow on. It is important to eradicate mold and mildew because they break down the surfaces they are growing on. These surfaces could be the beams of your house, your floor joists, your carpet or walls. Moisture: Perfect for Mold and Mildew Growth For mold or mildew to grow, there must be moisture present. Mold and mildew cannot grow without moisture. Indoor areas that have excessive buildup of moisture or poor air circulation are susceptible to mold and mildew growth. The best way to prevent mold and mildew outbreaks is with low humidity, low moisture and proper ventilation. Good air circulation will cause any minor water buildup from condensation to evaporate. This way mold cannot grow. It is imperative to fix all sources of standing moisture. The EPA states that if areas are dried within 24 to 48 hours of water damage, mold most likely will not grow.
