Tips for Cleaning Mold

When cleaning mold, there are some safety precautions you should take:

* Always be sure the room you are working in is well ventilated. * Prior to cleaning mold, be sure you have gloves, a mask and eye protection. * For a small area of mold to be cleaned, use 1/2 cup of household bleach per gallon of water to disinfect the area. * You can also clean the mold with a mixture of detergent and water. * Never mix any detergent or other item containing ammonia with chlorine bleach. This will give off a toxic gas that can cause you severe harm! * You can also purchase special cleaners designed to clean mold. * After cleaning mold, be sure you have removed the source of moisture that caused the problem in the fist place.

Methods to Remove Mold

For severe mold infestations, a professional should be called in to clean and remove the mold. This would be the safest way to handle an extreme mold problem. For smaller jobs or if you want to tackle this yourself, there are safety precautions and equipment you will need.

First, you need gloves. Ideal gloves are made from rubber or vinyl and are long enough to reach the middle of your forearm. Another option is the standard cleaning gloves that most of us use when washing dishes and cleaning houses.

Then you need eye protection like safety goggles. Goggles are preferred to glasses as they offer better protection in a wet environment.

Then you should have a N-95 type of respirator. This can be purchased rather inexpensively from your local hardware or home improvement store. Additionally, you can check for a respirator online. Prices will vary according how respirators are made. Some have filters in the front and others on the sides. They will come with instructions. It is imperative that you follow these instructions exactly so that the mask works properly. Once well equipped with safety gear, you are ready to eradicate that mold!

More Precautions for Cleaning Mold

Be sure to wear proper gloves. Neoprene ones or ones made for handling strong chemicals are best. These are usually stiffer than the standard rubber or latex gloves and they are usually black in color. Never touch harsh chemicals or mold and mildew with your bare hands. Also proper eye protection is a must. Goggles without air vents are the safest ones to use. These will help prevent mold contamination of your face and eyes.
